In 2007 he started The Genetic Genealogist (www.thegeneticgenealogist.com), one of the earliest blogs on the topic. Dr. Bettinger has been interviewed and quoted on personal genomics topics in Newsweek, New Scientist, Wired, and others. He is the author of The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy, and co-author with Debbie Parker Wayne of the award-winning Genetic Genealogy in Practice, the world’s first genetic genealogy workbook.

Blaine frequently authors articles and gives presentations to educate others about the use of DNA to explore their ancestry. He has been an instructor for genetic genealogy courses at Excelsior College, the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR), Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), Virtual Institute of Genealogical Research, and Family Tree University. Seminar Schedule

Saturday, April 1, 2017

Chesapeake Room, Oklahoma History Center
800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive, Oklahoma City, OK  73105

9:30 am Doors Open - Registration/Check-in
9:50 am Introduction of Speaker
Using Autosomal DNA to Explore Your Ancestry
Starting in about 2010, genealogists added autosomal DNA to reveal hidden information beyond the Y-DNA and mtDNA. Useful for ethnicity estimates, finding long-lost cousins, and examining specific genealogical problems, it is now a must have tool for genealogy.

Break
Using Third-Party Tools to Analyze Your Autosomal DNA
Although DNA testing companies provide their own analysis of test results, there are third-party tools that allow test-takers to learn even more about their genomic heritage, including admixture calculators and the identification of genetic cousins. Together we’ll explore some of these tools and learn how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Lunch
Begging for Spit
One of the biggest challenges facing genealogists is asking family members and non-genealogists to undergo DNA testing. Together we’ll examine novel and interactive ways to encourage participation by making these individuals stakeholders in DNA testing.

Break
The Science Fiction Future of Genetic Genealogy
Although the future of genetic genealogy is not now, it will be very soon! Learn about how companies are using DNA and genealogies to reconstruct the genomes of ancestors. We’ll also learn how that information might be used in the future, including to create entire or partial family trees based solely on DNA test results! We will also examine how these recreated genomes might be used to generate the faces and health of ancestors who have been dead for hundreds of years.

3:50 pm Closing
